Hamilton was born in 1964 and his place of birth is in San Francisco, the United States. Talking about his family background, he was born to the parents named L. G. Zerfas (father) and Joann Zyirek (mother). His father left the family when Laird was below the age of one. After that, Laird’s mother took him to Hawaii.

He met surfer William Stuart “Bill” Hamilton in 1967 as a young child on Pūpūkea beach on the North Shore. Laird became close to Bill Hamilton and invited him to come to his home and meet his mother.
