Rippon was born in 1989 and his place of birth is in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was born to the parents named Kelly (mother) and Rick Rippon (father). He was born as the eldest child to his parents out of six. He was born with the disorder of hearing issue for which he went through surgery at Yale University. He went to compete in the junior level and participated at the 2005–06 ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Croatia. There he was placed in the sixth position.

He finished 11th at the junior level at the 2006 U.S. Championships. After leaving the coaching of Yelena Sergeeva, he went to work with Nikolai Morozov at the Ice House in Hackensack.

He competed in the 2007–08 ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit in the 2007–08 season. He made gold medal in his name at the Harghita Cup in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania. At the Sofia Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria, he was able to earn the silver medal. He set a record by being the first person to break 200 points at a Junior level competition at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final.

He earned the junior title at the 2008 U.S. Championships. He won the gold medal after earning the trip to the 2008 Junior Worlds. He started receiving training from Brian Orser in December 2008 after moving to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The change of his coaching was officially announced on January 2, 2009.

He finished seventh in his senior-level national debut at the 2009 U.S. Championships. He made a big success by during the first person to earn the two World Junior titles.
