Who is Asuka?

Her real name is Kanako Urai (浦井 佳奈子) and landed the planet on September 26, 1981, which makes the age of Asuka be 39 years old as of 2020. She is a professional wrestler who is best known for being signed with WWE Network and appears under the SmackDown brand in her ring name “Asuka.”

Early Life and Education

Asuka is Japanese by nationality who was born in 1981 and her place of birth is in Osaka, Osaka, Japan. Urai is believed to have been grown up in her home country with her parents as she was the student of the Osaka University of Arts Junior College from where she completed her graduation. She was an active child with a deep interest in wrestling and sports from an early age. Urai initially worked as a contributor for XBOX magazine and also used to work for Nintendo DS as a graphic designer. As per some online sources, she has also worked for other mobile applications. She was a great fan of numbers of legend wrestlers and grew up watching the actions of Satoru Sayama, Nobuhiko Takada, Keiji Mutoh, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Antonio Inoki, Minoru Suzuki and Volk Han.

On June 16, 2004, Urai made her debut in the professional wrestling world appearing in AtoZ under the ring name Kana. Urai wrestled there for a couple of years but has to get retired because of a chronic nephritis injury. The retirement was announced on March 19, 2006.

Due to injury and retirement, she didn’t wrestle for about a year and a half but eventually, she made her comeback as a freelance wrestler on September 22, 2007, playing for various promotions including NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling, Ice Ribbon, Pro Wrestling Zero1, JWP Joshi Puroresu and Pro Wrestling Wave.

On October 10, 2009, she turned as the winner of the NEO Tag Team Championship sharing with Takahash. They grab the title by beating the tag team of Kyoko Inoue and Hiroyo Matsumoto.  After that, Urai went for fighting on various promotions like Toryumon Mexico’s DragonMania VII, DDT Pro-Wrestling promotion, Smash promotion, Pro Wrestling Noah and much more.

One of her big achievements in her professional wrestling career came when Urai appeared in WWE’s NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn event on August 22, 2015. There were rumors that she has made a contract with WWE was spread which was later officially confirmed in Tokyo by arranging a press conference on September 8. She became the part of the NXT and this was the first time where she adopted a name called “Asuka.”

On September 23, she made her debut appearance and her debut match was on October 7 at NXT TakeOver: Respect against Dana. With a win from her debut match, she continued to earn victories in her account and also turned as the main roster performer Cameron. She defeated wrestler Emma in a match at NXT TakeOver: London on December 16.

She was the participant to battle royal on January 13, 2016 episode of NXT where she failed to become number one contender for Bayley’s NXT Women’s Championship after being eliminated second. Urai later earned the NXT Women’s Championship which she had to relinquish at the August 24 NXT tapings due to the breaking of her right collarbone. Asuka was named as one of the greatest champions in WWE history by William Regal, the NXT General Manager during the farewell program.

Asuka made her return to WWE to the RAW brand. Her signing with the brand was revealed on September 11, 2017, which was good news for her fans and well-wishers. She defeated her old rival Emma at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs match on 22nd October. She was also the part of the five–on–five elimination tag team match representing the Team Raw.

One of the best moments in WWE history was created by Asuka as she defeated Dana Brooke in three seconds setting the record of the fastest win in a women’s match in WWE. She became the winner of the SmackDown Women’s Championship in a match against Lynch and Flair who were pushed off a ladder by Ronda Rousey.

In the first title defense of her SmackDown Women’s Championship, she got her victory and later she started a feud with Becky Lynch in January 2019. Asuka and Becky were set for a title match at the Royal Rumble on which she retained her title through submission.

Following her win against Ruby Riott, she was qualified for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match on the April 13, 2020 episode of Raw. Asuka became the new Raw Women’s Champion when Becky Lynch (fiancé of Seth Rollins) revealed her pregnancy and stated the ladder match winner would be named as the Raw Women’s Champion.
