Who is Erick Rowan?

Born as Joseph Ruud (real name), he landed the planet on November 28, 1981, which makes his age be 39 years old as of 2020. By profession, he is an American professional wrestler best known for being signed to WWE. He performs under the SmackDown brand appearing in the ring name “Rowan”. Previously, his ring name was “Erick Rowan.”

As of May 2019, Rowan alongside Daniel Bryan is the SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Before arriving in the WWE, he also wrestled in Japan where he was trained for Pro Wrestling Noah. In 2011, he signed with WWE and was sent to FCW, WWE’s developmental territory. Later, he made his debut in NXT and became The Wyatt Family’s founding member.

 

Early Life and Education

Joseph Ruud was born in1981 and his place of birth is in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent his childhood days mostly in Montrose, Minnesota. Talking more about his family life, he is of Norwegian descent where his ancestor migrated from Nannestad.

Regarding his education and academic achievements, Rowan was enrolled at the University of Minnesota Morris. He is also a trained guitarist as well as a footballer during his University days.

 

Career and Professional Life

Joseph Ruud was initially trained with Eddie Sharkey in 2003 from which he started his professional wrestling career. First, his ring name was Thoruf Marius where he went to participate in various promotions until 2007. He was invited to get trained and wrestle in Japan to Pro Wrestling Noah’s (NOAH) dojo.

He went to participate in both single and team matches. In 2008, he returned back to the United States to complete his tour in Japan. After the return, he went to compete in Minnesota-based F1rst Wrestling promotion. There he became popular for his feud with Brody Hoofer.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in his professional wrestling career came in February 2011 when he grabbed an opportunity to sign a developmental contract with WWE. He was assigned to FCW as Erick Rowan as his ring name. In August 2011, he made his first appearance in FCW TV winning against Kenneth Cameron.

Rowan appeared in the new rebrand of FCW i.e. NXT Wrestling as a follower of Brya Wyatt on the December 12, 2012 episode. He was introduced as Wyatt’s second son where Luke Harper was said to be Wyatt’s first son. With Harper, Rowan went to defeat Tatsu and Watson in the NXT Tag Team Championship tournament’s opening round.

With the help of Wyatt’s interference, they reached the finals by winning over Bo Dallas and Michael McGillicutty but lost to Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey in the finals. They win the NXT Tag Team Championship by winning over Neville and Bo Dallas on the May 8 episode of NXT.

The Wyatt Family made a win over the team of Ohno, Neville and Graves on the June 19 episode of NXT. Rowan and Har[er lost their title on July 17 episode of NXT in a match against Neville and Graves. The Wyatt Family appeared in the WWE’s brand Raw by assaulting Kane the July 8 episode of Raw.

Rowan’s first WWE in-ring debut came on the July 26 episode of SmackDown in a tag team match against Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay and Tensai) with Harper. Their first tag team loss came on the October 11 episode of SmackDown where they were defeated by Cody Rhodes and Goldust.

The Wyatt Family started a feud with The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose). They also started a feud with John Cena and The Usos. Harp[er and Rowan were set free from The Wyatt Family which made them start their single competition. He also faced Big Show at Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) match.

Rowan was seen reuniting with Luke Harper in May by attacking Fandang. He joined The Wyatt Family which was shaving feud with The Brothers of Destruction. The Family defeated ECW Originals at TLC where Rowan was the only member of the team to get eliminated from the match.

Rowan was also part of the Royal Rumble match on January 24, 2016, where he got eliminated by Brock Lesnar. At WrestleMania 32, he competed with The Rock making his first-ever WrestleMania singles match. He was quickly defeated in 6 seconds by The Rock in WrestleMania.

The Wyatt Family also started a feud with The League of Nations, by attacking them on the April 4 episode of Raw. They also had a feud with the Tag Team Champions The New Day whom they defeated at Battleground.

On January 27, 2019, he returned back to the ring at the Royal Rumble after recovering from his injury. He was seen forming an alliance with Bryan helping him to retain the WWE Championship. They defeated The Usos on the May 7 episode of SmackDown for the Tag Team Championship.
