She played organized football in 1981 after moving to the United States. She played for the Robinson Secondary School team as a captain and was able to earn the under-19 national title with the Braddock Road Bluebelles. At William & Mary, she started playing as a forward from 1984 to 1987.

As a USSF Pro coaching license holder, she has garnered coaching experience for various under-20 and under-21 national teams. She is also serving the United States Soccer Federation as the Development Director. She has a successful track record of working as head coach of a number of women youth teams as well as an assistant coach of the women’s national team. In May 2014, she was appointed for the United States women’s permanent head coach.

The United States Soccer announced that Ellis would leave as coach of the Women’s National Team on 30 July 2019. Even after her departure, she continued working with U.S. Soccer as an Ambassador.
