Jim initially worked in the Young-Quinlan department store at a restaurant based in Minneapolis. He also worked at a nearby boutique called the Three Sisters. With his wife, he worked at Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network in 1966. The show used to have low viewers at that time but the Bakkers’ contribution made the show to network’s growth. The Jim and Tammy Show was broadcasted from their Portsmouth, Virginia studio which aired for multiple years aiming the young children. The duo then became the host of The 700 Club.
They left Robertson’s ministry in 1972 and after a year joined with Paul and Jan Crouch which made them become the part of the Trinity Broadcasting Network. In 1976, Jim with his first wife put The PTL Club on the air after moving to Charlotte, North Carolina. The Bakkers became more popular for contributing The PTL Club as its host.
