Cramer was born in 1955 and his place of birth is in Wyndmoor, Springfield Township, Pennsylvania, United States of America. Talking about his family background, he was born to the parents named N. Ken Cramer (father) and Louise A. Cramer (mother). His parents were Jewish where his mother was an artist and his father used to own c company called International Packaging Products.

Later, he was enrolled at Harvard College from where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1977. During his early days, he used to sell Coca-Cola and Ice creams. He started working as an entry-level reporter where he used to receive a salary of 15,000 USD annually. He started his work at the Tallahassee Democrat in Tallahassee, Florida on March 1, 1978. He was seen covering various incidents including the Ted Bundy murders. He made his writing journey by working for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner writing obituaries.

He has struggled really hard in his early days where he was forced to live out of his car for 9 months because his apartment was robbed.
