Schlereth was born in 1966 and his place of birth is in Anchorage, Alaska, the United States of America. Talking about his family background, he was born to the parents named Janette Schlereth (mother) and Herb Schlereth (father). He grew up in his hometown and struggled with dyslexia as a youth.

In 1984, he completed his high school from Robert Service High School. He received scholarship offers from Hawaii and Idaho (I-AA at the time). During the 1989 NFL Draft, Schlereth was selected by the Washington Redskins in the tenth round (#263 overall). He played six out of twelve seasons with the Denver Broncos from 1995 to 2000. He became a member of three Super Bowl championship teams during his football career. In the 1991 and 1998 seasons, he was selected to the Pro Bowl for his performances.
