Early Life and Education

He was born in 1956 in Beirut, Lebanon. Talking about his parents, he is the son of father Malcolm H. Kerr and mother Ann Zwicker. His father was an American academic at the time of Steve’s birth who was specialized in the Middle East. Steve grew up with his three siblings with whom he has spent some memorable childhood days. Regarding his family background, he is the grandson to Stanley Kerr who was the Near East Relief’s volunteer who helped numerous women and orphans after the Armenian Genocide. Because of Steve’s father’s profession, he spent his childhood days in Middle Eastern countries, mainly in Lebanon.

Regarding his education and academic achievements, he attended the Cairo American College which is located in Egypt and was also enrolled at Beirut, Lebanon based the American Community School. He also went to Los Angeles based Palisades High School which is now renamed to Palisades Charter High School. In 1988, he completed his graduation receiving a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the University of Arizona with emphasis on English, sociology and history.

Steve’s father Malcolm was killed on January 18, 1984, by Shia Lebanese militia called Islamic Jihad when he was serving the American University of Beirut as president at the age of 52. According to the reports, the president of the American University of Beirut was shot twice in his head on the backside outside his office.  Steve encountered his father’s death when he was eighteen years old.

 

Career and Professional Life

Moving to his career and professional achievement records, he initially started playing for Phoenix Suns after being selected at the 1988 NBA draft. In 1989, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for whom he played for three seasons until 1992. For the 1992–93 season, he played for the Orlando Magic.

Steve made a playing deal with the Chicago Bulls in 1993. For the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, Steve played a crucial part in the team’s championship. The Chicago Bulls traded him to the San Antonio Spurs in January 1999. The team reached the 1999 NBA Finals and became able to grab their first NBA Championship. Kerr turned to become the four times straight NBA titles winner alongside Frank Saul. On July 24, 2001, Steve alongside Derek Anderson was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He played 65 games for the 2001–02 season with Portland Trail Blazers. On August 2, 2002, Steve alongside Erick Barkley was traded back to San Antonio. He made an impressive four second-half three-pointers in a match against the Dallas Mavericks at the 2003 Western Conference Finals’ Game 6. After eliminating Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs turned as the winner of the NBA championship by defeating New Jersey Nets by a 4-2 victory. After playing the 2003 NBA Finals, he announced his retirement.
