Military Career

In 1983, she was commissioned through Air Force ROTC after completing her bachelor’s degree. Later, she joined Undergraduate Pilot Training at Reese Air Force Base and worked at Boston-city-based Barksdale Air Force Base flying KC-10. For six years, she served as a co-pilot, instructor pilot and also as aircraft commander. She was also part of the United States invasion of Panama. She worked as a test pilot until her selection for the C-17 Combined Test Force. She retired from the Air Force in 2007 after having experience flying more than 50 different aircraft with over 5,000 hours of flight time.

NASA Career

In late 1994, she was selected as an astronaut candidate after which she spent a year of training making her qualified for flight assignment as a shuttle pilot. She worked on various projects for the Astronaut Office alongside support for launch and landing. She was the lead for the crew module on the Columbia Reconstruction Team. She also served the Orion branch of the Astronaut Office as a branch chief.

In the early 2000s, she worked on STS-112 and STS-92 as a pilot and later served as the mission commander on STS-120. This made her set a record to be the only woman to command a Space Shuttle mission after Eileen Collins.

She was named a member of President-elect Joe Biden’s presidential transition Agency Review Team in 2020 where she was mainly responsible for supporting NASA-related transition efforts.

She was nominated by the White House as NASA’s deputy administrator which was announced on April 16, 2021, and later the Senate decided to appoint her. Melroy was confirmed into office by administrator Bill Nelson on June 21, 2021.
