Brian Timothy Finn was born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand to the parents named Mary Finn (mother) and Dick Finn (father). He attended Sacred Heart College which was a Catholic boarding school based in Auckland. To complete his Bachelor of Arts degree, he joined the University of Auckland in 1971. After a year, he quit his University education and; later formed a group named Split Ends with Phil. The group was renamed to Split Ends in 1975.

Tim released his debut solo album titled “Escapade” though he was the member of Split Enz in 1983. It turned out as a mega-successful album hit in Australia and New Zealand. The song Fraction Too Much Friction became a massive hit of that period. Tim contributed to Split Enz album Conflicting Emotions and finally leave the band in 1984.
