In his early days, he sued to work for Les Thatcher for HWA promotion during which he used to sell popcorn as a teenager. At the age of 18, he used to take training from Thatcher and HWA wrestler Cody Hawk.

Under the ring name ‘Jon Moxley’, he made his wrestling debut in 2004. He was able to earn the HWA Tag Team Championship twice in the following year. In 2006, he was named the HWA Heavyweight Championship twice which he lost to Chad Collyer and Brian Jennings. In January 2010, he turned as the HWA Heavyweight Championship for the third time and later lost the title to Gerome Phillips.

He went through a triceps injury in late 2017 which made him take a break for nine months. He made his return assisting Rollins in an attack from Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre on the August 13, 2018 episode of Raw. This time, Ambrose returned with a new look having a full beard, a short haircut and a muscular physique. He assisted Rollins again in earning the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam in the following week. They helped Roman Reigns in attacking Braun Strowman which helped reuniting The Shield once again.

The Shield faced Ziggler, Strowman and McIntyre in October and got victorious and later were defeated in a rematch. It was seen that Ambrose was very frustrated and walked away from his teammates after the match.

When Reigns revealed the return of leukemia and relinquished the Universal Championship, Ambrose and Rollins defeated McIntire and Ziggler in the October 22 episode of Raw. They became able to earn the Raw Tag Team Championship but Ambrose gave a big surprise by attacking Rollins.
