Christina Hammock Koch was born in 1979 and her place of birth is in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Talking about her family background, she was born to the parents named Barbara Johnsen (mother) from Frederick, Maryland and Dr. Ronald Hammock (father) from Jacksonville, North Carolina.
She spent most of her childhood days in Jacksonville, North Carolina. By her young age, she dreamed of becoming an astronaut which has now proven to be successful. Talking about her education and academic achievements, she attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics from where she completed her graduation in 1997.
Following her high school graduation, she went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh from where she received a double bachelor’s degree in Physics and in Electrical Engineering. In 2001 at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), she was able to turn as a graduate of the NASA Academy program. The following year, she earned her Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Career and Professional Life
Christina has served in the field of remote scientific field engineering and space science instrument development. She worked for the scientific instruments on several NASA missions as an Electrical Engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She also served Montgomery College in Maryland as Adjunct Faculty.
From 2004 to 2007, she served the United States Antarctic Program as a Research Associate during which she traveled to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. She never got disappointed with her work even working at minus-111 degree temperature. She started working at Johns Hopkins University’s Space Department of the Applied Physics Laboratory as an Electrical Engineer from 2007 to 2009. There, she was mainly focused on developing on space science instrument.
After that, Koch served NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in 2012 as Station Chief of the American Samoa Observatory as well as at NOAA’s Global Monitoring Division Baseline Observatory as a Field Engineer.
As a part of Astronaut Group 21, she was selected by NASA in June 2013. She received various astronaut training including T‐38 flight training, spacewalks, water and wilderness survival training, physiological training, etc.

Alongside Aleksey Ovchinin (born on 28 September 1971) and Nick Hague (born on September 24, 1975), she was launched on Soyuz MS-12 to the International Space Station on March 14, 2019. On March 29, 2019, she was scheduled to perform her first EVA alongside Anne McClain (born on June 7, 1979) for the first all-female spacewalk. However, the scheduled spacewalk wasn’t made due to spacesuit sizing issues.
