Before starting her professional wrestling career, Fanene was a plus-size model. She was assigned to their developmental territory NXT after signing with WWE in early 2014. On May 7, 2013, she made her in-ring debut under the ring name Zada. She was teamed up with Devin Taylor but defeated by Bayley and Carmella. She changed her ring name to Nia Jax in August of the same month. Her last match in NXT was with Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship which she lost on December 28 episode of 2016.
During the 2016 WWE draft, she was drafted from NXT to the Raw brand on July 19, 2016. She was in a feud with Alicia Fox and later with Sasha Banks as well.
