During his childhood, he had to move to several places with his family because of his father’s profession. He joined Fort Riley Middle School while his father was stationed at Fort Riley. During that time, he got introduced to amateur wrestling in seventh grade. He earned his high school graduation from Junction City High School. After that, he went to Missouri Valley College where he was popular for being NAIA National Wrestling Champion in the 177 lbs category for three consecutive years in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

In 1999, he received his bachelor’s degree majoring in recreation administration and human-service agency management. After that, he followed in his father’s footsteps for which he joined the army after college. However, he continued competing in amateur wrestling in the army’s World Class Athlete Program.

He was able to earn a gold and silver medal in the International Military Sports Council senior freestyle wrestling event during his time in the army. He was preparing to be qualified for Team USA to wrestle at the 2004 Olympic Games for which he started living and training in Colorado Springs in 2003.

However, he witnessed a bank robbery and did his best to dive for cover to avoid gunfire which resulted in a knee injury. The injury needs surgery which unfortunately ended his amateur career.

He appeared into the limelight after wrestling in dark matches for both the Raw and SmackDown! brands in mid-2005. He made a big breakthrough after his televised WWE debut under his real name on September 23, 2005, as a face on SmackDown!. He was introduced as a 2002 Silver Medalist, four-time All-American, two-time Armed Forces Champion and three-time National Amateur Wrestling Champion.

He successfully got victorious against Simon Dean in his debut match. He defeated Dean again at No Mercy on October 9, 2005. He continued his winning streak beating numerous superstars. He got victorious against Orlando Jordan on the November 11 episode of SmackDown

He was known for his multiple “power moves”. He turned the first SmackDown! wrestler to qualify for Royal Rumble on January 6, 2006. On January 29, 2006, he participated in the Royal Rumble match where he was Kane and Big Show, the World Tag Team Champions.

He started a feud with John “Bradshaw” Layfield whom he faced at No Way Out on February 19, 2006. He lost the match marking his first loss in the singles competition following the interference from Finlay. This led the feud between Lashley and Finlay and faced multiple times including a lumberjack match on the March 17 episode of SmackDown where Lashley lost the match.

On the March 24, 2006, episode of SmackDown, he won the “Last Chance” battle royal where he defeated MNM at the last. On April 2, 2006, he participated in his first WrestleMania in the Money in the Bank ladder match. However, he failed to capture the match and it was won by Rob Van Dam. To face the Court, he teamed with Batista. Later, he was disqualified to wrestle when the physician found he has elevated enzymes of the liver and was deprived of wrestling until further evaluation. He made his return the SmackDown! roster and continued his feud with the Court. He faced King Booker at No Mercy for the World Heavyweight Championship.

He moved to the ECW brand on November 14, 2006, where he made his debut by making a surprise appearance to sign a contract for the final spot for the ECW World Championship in the Extreme Elimination Chamber match. He turned the new ECW World Champion by delivering spear and pinning both Test and The Big Show. He defended his title against Test, Hardcore Holly, Mr. Kennedy, Big Show, Rob Van Dam and Kenny Dykstra.

He turned the first and only person to ever break Chris Masters’ Masterlock hold on March 19, 2007. He appeared as the 26th entrant at the Royal Rumble match on January 27, 2019. However, he got eliminated in 13 seconds by Rollins.

He lost his title to Finn Balor in a handicap match after Balor pinned Lio Rush. He teamed with Drew McIntyre and Baron Corbin against The Shield at Fastlane on March 10, 2019. He teamed with Jinder Mahal in a match against Finn Bálor after which Balor received the Intercontinental Championship rematch. He lost his title to Balor at WrestleMania 35 on April 7, 2019.
