It was announced that Orton would be an opponent to Brock Lesnar for SummerSlam on the July 7, 2016 episode of SmackDown. However, Lesnar was drafted to Raw on July 19 at the 2016 WWE draft where Orton was drafted to SmackDown. Orton appeared as a guest on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel where he stated that he wanted to face Lesnar. He also delivered an RKO to Lesnar during the August 1 episode of Raw. In revenge, Lesnar attacked Orton in the following night where Lesnar delivered an F-5 to Orton.  Orton was defeated by Lesnar at SummerSlam by technical knockout.

He later joined The Wyatt Family in 2016 and together with stablemates Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper he won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Later, he turned to Wyatt on the February 28 episode of SmackDown Live in 2017. The following year, he was able to become the United States Championship.
