Early Life and Education

Gutiérrez was born in 1974 and his place of birth is in Chula Vista, California, the United States of America. Talking about his family background, he was born to the parents named Maria del Rosario (mother) and Roberto Gutierrez Sr. (father). His uncle’s name is Miguel Ángel López Díaz (born on January 8, 1958) who is also popular by the ring name Rey Misterio but to distinguish from his nephew, he is often referred as Rey Misterio Sr.

 

Career and Professional Life

At the age of 14, Gutierrez made his debut on April 30, 1989, in Mexico. His uncle Rey Misterio Sr. trained him and soon developed his trademark of the Lucha Libre high flying style. Initially, he was popular by the ring names like “Colibrí (Humming bird)” and “La Lagartija Verde (The Green Lizard)”. It was his uncle who gave Gutierrez the ring name “Rey Mysterio Jr.”

Gutierrez was able to receive the award of “Most Improved Wrestler” in Mexico during which he was popular by the ring name Colibrí. In 1992, he entered the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) where he feuded with Juventud Guerrera. They had a match together joined by Misterio Sr, on Mysterio’s side and Fuerza Guerrera (Juventud Guerrera’s father) on Juventud Guerrera’s side.

In 1995, Gutierrez signed with Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) where he defeated Psicosis, in his debut match. On June 16, 1996, he made his World Championship Wrestling (WCW) debut challenging Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship.

Mysterio started his independent wrestling career in Mexico after WCW being closed. By debuting in an eight-man tag team match, he made his first appearance in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). In CMLL, he wrestled in 10 matches. After that, he returned back to the United States and worked for IWA Mid-South and the Heartland Wrestling Association.

Mysterio made a big breakthrough in his wrestling career by signing with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in June 2002. He appeared as “Rey Mysterio” dropping “Jr.” from his ring name. Mysterio agreed to put on his mask again at the insistence of Vince McMahon.

On July 25, 2002, he made his first appearance in WWE from the episode of SmackDown in a match against Chavo Guerrero. He started a feud with Kurt Angle and they had a match together at SummerSlam where Mysterio was forced to give up due to the ankle lock.

With Edge, he wrestled for the newly created and SmackDown!-exclusive WWE Tag Team Championship against Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit in No Mercy. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter voted the match as Match of the Year. At the 2006 Royal Rumble Match, he appeared as a second entrant and successfully become the winner. He remained in the ring for 62 minutes and this victory made Mysterio hold a Royal Rumble record.

 

 

WWE reported that Mysterio would be suspended due to his second violation of the company’s Talent Wellness Program policy which lasted until June 25. On June 9, 2018, he made his appearance in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in Osaka-jo Hall show. Mysterio made a surprise return at the Royal Rumble on January 28, 2018. He was eliminated by Finn Balor before which he eliminated Adam Cole.

A confirmed report that Mysterio has signed with WWE for a two-year contract was made on September 19. Mysterio defeated Samoa Joe becoming the twenty-first WWE Grand Slam Champion on May 19, 2019. However, he vacates the title due to an injury that he suffered from a post-match beatdown by Joe.

In a tag team match, he was savagely attacked by Seth Rollins and the team of Rollins and Murphy won by DQ against Mysterio and Black. Because of the assault, Mysterio’s eye was severely injured in the storyline. It was the frustration of Rollins that he lost in a previous match Drew McIntyre.

His son Dominic was found to have revenge against Rollins and his team. The father-son team appeared in WWE Payback 2020 in a tag-team match against Rollins and Murphy and was successful to register the win, which was the first for his son. On September 15 Raw episode of 2020, his son lost to Seth Rollins in a steel cage match and he was in the ringside along with his daughter and wife.

Rey Mysterio is married to Angie Gutierrez. The couple is now parents to a son named Dominic Gutierrez (born 1997) and a daughter named Aalyah Gutierrez (born 2001).
